Savannah Trends
In Savannah, the Counter Narcotics Team (CNT) is the primary unit in charge of investigating drug activity in the Chatham County area. According to the CNT, there are on average 45-55 persons per month arrested for drug-related offenses; this includes drug sales and trafficking. Cocain is the predominat drug of choice, marijuana the secondary, and pharmaceutical drugs the tertiary. There is also evidence of a high usage of Ectasy. Little heroin or methamphetamine use was reported.
Local treatment centers report that the primary drug of choice of persons entering treatment has been alcohol and opiates. In addition, there has been a high percentage of benzodiazepine use including Xanax and Valium. This suggests that prescription drug abuse may be becoming more prevalent.
